The youth from Shivaji Nagar were exposed to Jazz music for the very first time, when Mélina Tobiana and her band, Melina Tobiana Quintet performed at Apnalaya’s Community Resource and Advisory Centre (CRAC) on 12 April.
Mélina Tobiana, a promising new age jazz singer and composer from France, is an excellent pianist. A quintet of modern jazz, the group imposes its style on the borders of jazz, groove and soul.
The event was orchestrated by Gatecrash India as part of their Music Mulakatein sessions. Music Mulakatein is an initiative to expose unique communities to ‘Indie music,’ who would not otherwise have access or the opportunity to do so. A series of free concerts and workshops have been organized in collaboration with local and foreign artists, in partnerships with Indian NGOs.
“Through Music Mulakatein we hope that music will act as a catalyst for change and also provide people from those communities learning, entertainment, joy and respite from their usual routines,” said Emmanuelle de Decker, Founder of Gatecrash.
Gatecrash is a music agency that supports the growing independent music scenario in India, with a focus on curating & promoting live music, touring bands in India & thereby developing their own music initiatives. This is the second time that they collaborated with Apnalaya.
“It was a very different and exciting experience for us. We were worried that children would not have heard about jazz – but music transcends all of this and it was a wonderful cultural exchange.” Melina said.
“Singing for them and engaging with them was absolutely exhilarating – this is not an experience we will forget! ” she added.
